An unorthodox or independent-minded person; a person who refuses to follow the customs or rules of a group.

A maverick is a positive or neutral term for a rebel. They do not necessarily want to destroy the system; they simply choose to operate outside of standard conventions because they think differently.

The story behind the word. Samuel Maverick was a Texas rancher who refused to brand his cattle. When other ranchers found unbranded calves wandering the plains, they called them 'Maverick's calves.' Eventually, the term came to describe any person who refused to be 'branded' by society's rules.
