The story behind the word. From Anglo-Norman 'sustener', from Latin 'sustinere' (to hold up, bear, endure), combining 'sub-' (under/up from below) and 'tenere' (to hold). In 1987, the UN Brundtland Commission popularized 'sustainable development' in its present sense.
