The climate of a very small or restricted area that differs significantly from the surrounding climate.
Created by localized features such as urban heat islands, hills, bodies of water, or dense vegetation canopies.
The story behind the word. Climatologists combined the prefix 'micro-' (small) with 'climate' in the early twentieth century as they began measuring temperature differentials within single valleys, urban streets, and forest layers.
