The climate of a very localized area, especially when it differs significantly from the surrounding regional climate.
In built environments, tall buildings, shade canopy, and asphalt create artificial local temperature and wind variations.
The story behind the word. Coined in the early 20th century by combining Ancient Greek 'mikros' (small) with 'climate'. Climatologists recognized that street canyons formed by glass high-rises and dark asphalt create micro-scale wind tunnels and heat pockets.
