The story behind the word. In ancient Roman religion, the 'genius' was the guardian spirit assigned to a person or place at birth. A 'genialis' day was one devoted to honoring one's spirit through feasting and joy. By the 16th century, English adopted genial to mean festive, warm, and naturally cheerful.
