thermostat

THUR-muh-stat /ˈθɜːrməstæt/
nounB1TOEFLIELTS
generaltechnical

A device that automatically regulates temperature, or that activates a device when the temperature reaches a certain point.

Crucial in exotic pet keeping to prevent heating elements from overheating and injuring cold-blooded animals.

The story behind the word. Coined in 1831 by Scottish chemist Andrew Ure. He combined the Greek 'therme' (heat) with 'statos' (standing or stationary) to describe his invention of a bi-metallic device that kept the temperature of steam boilers steady.

Word relationships

  • temperature controller: 'Temperature controller' is a broader industrial term, while 'thermostat' is the standard consumer and scientific term.

Commonly confused with

  • thermometer: A thermometer only measures temperature, whereas a thermostat actively controls and regulates it by turning heaters on and off.

Word family

  • thermostatic (adjective): Controlled by or relating to a thermostat.
  • thermostatically (adverb): By means of a thermostat.

Collocations

  • digital thermostat
  • proportional thermostat
  • thermostat setting
  • adjust the thermostat

Example sentences

  • "Always plug your heat mat into a thermostat to ensure it does not burn the bottom of your terrarium." A safety warning for reptile keepers.
  • "The digital thermostat can be programmed to lower the house temperature during the night to save energy." A technical description of home heating systems.

Memory hook

Think of 'thermo' (heat, like a thermos) and 'stat' (static/staying the same). It keeps the heat static. Keeps temperature steady.

When not to use

Do not confuse with a thermometer, which merely measures and displays temperature but does not control it.

Fun facts

  • In herpetology, 'pulse proportional' thermostats are used; instead of turning a heater fully on and off, they send tiny pulses of electricity to maintain an incredibly stable temperature down to a fraction of a degree.
