canopy
KAN-uh-pee
/ˈkænəpi/
The high, sheltering branchy layer of a forest; also, an ornamental cloth covering hung or held over something, or a protective lid/cover over an enclosure.
In vivariums, it refers to both the upper leafy layer of plants and the physical lid or light fixture that sits on top of the tank.
The story behind the word. Comes from the Greek 'konopeion', meaning 'a bed with a mosquito net', which is derived from 'konops' (mosquito). The Romans adopted it as 'conopeum' (a canopy bed), and over time, the meaning shifted from a protective net to any overhanging cover, including the top layer of a forest.
