In logic, an argument can be 'valid' even if its premises are completely false, as long as the logical structure holds together. An argument is only 'sound' if it is valid AND its premises are factually true.
Saying 'he refuted the allegations' implies he successfully PROVED them false. If he merely said 'I didn't do it', he DENIED or REBUTTED them.
