Confusing 'infer' with 'imply'

Learners often swap these. Remember: the speaker IMPLIES (drops a hint), while the listener INFERS (picks up the hint and draws a conclusion).

Confusing 'valid' with 'sound'

In logic, an argument can be 'valid' even if its premises are completely false, as long as the logical structure holds together. An argument is only 'sound' if it is valid AND its premises are factually true.

Using 'refute' when you mean 'rebut' or 'deny'

Saying 'he refuted the allegations' implies he successfully PROVED them false. If he merely said 'I didn't do it', he DENIED or REBUTTED them.

Confusing 'premise' (singular noun) with 'premises' (plural noun)

A 'premise' is a foundational claim in logic. 'Premises' (plural) usually refers to a physical building or property.
