In formal logic, 'valid' applies STRICTLY to an argument's structure. An argument can be completely valid even if its premises are factually absurd.

The story behind the word. Rooted in Latin 'valere' (to be strong), which also gave us 'valiant' and 'value'. A valid argument is one strong enough structurally to bear the weight of its conclusion.
