A hypothetical form of matter that is thought to account for approximately 27% of the mass-energy content of the universe and does not emit or reflect any electromagnetic radiation, making it undetectable by conventional means.

Dark matter's existence is inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. It is not 'dark' in the sense of being black, but rather 'dark' because it doesn't interact with light.

The story behind the word. The term 'Dark Matter' was first introduced by Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky in 1933. He observed that galaxies in the Coma Cluster were moving too fast to be held together by the gravity of their visible matter alone, suggesting there must be some unseen, 'dark' mass providing extra gravitational pull. The name simply describes its primary characteristic: it doesn't emit or reflect light, making it invisible to us.
