Nebula

NEB-yuh-luh /ˈnɛbjʊlə/
nounB2SATTOEFL
formalscientific

A cloud of gas and dust in outer space, visible in the night sky either as an indistinct bright patch or as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter.

Nebulae are often stellar nurseries where new stars are born, or the remnants of dead stars. They come in various forms, including emission nebulae (glowing), reflection nebulae (reflecting starlight), and dark nebulae (obscuring light).

The story behind the word. The word 'nebula' comes directly from the Latin word nebula, which means 'mist,' 'cloud,' or 'vapor.' Early astronomers, observing these fuzzy, indistinct patches of light in the night sky through their telescopes, simply described them as 'clouds.' It wasn't until much later, with more powerful telescopes, that their true nature as vast interstellar clouds of gas and dust was understood.

Imagine a 'NICE BLUR' in the sky. Nebulae are blurry clouds of gas and dust. Cloud Blur

When not to use

Do not confuse a 'nebula' with a 'galaxy' (a system of billions of stars) or a 'planet'. It specifically refers to clouds of gas and dust.
