The story behind the word. The term 'entropy' was coined by German physicist Rudolf Clausius in 1865. He combined the Greek prefix 'en-' meaning 'in' and 'trope' meaning 'a turning' or 'transformation.' Clausius intended it to mean 'content of transformation,' referring to the energy that becomes unavailable for work during a process. It beautifully captures the idea of energy transforming into a less organized, more dispersed state.
