ancestor
AN-ses-ter
/ˈæn.ses.tər/
A person, typically one more remote than a grandparent, from whom one is descended.
Ancestor is a broad, respectful term for those who came before us, often carrying a sense of historical or cultural legacy.
The story behind the word. Ancestor comes from the Old French 'ancestre', which derives from the Latin 'antecessor', meaning 'one who goes before'. It is built from 'ante-' (before) and 'cedere' (to go), perfectly describing those who walked the earth before we did.
