The male head of a family, tribe, or organizational dynasty.

Patriarch can carry biblical or historical connotations of absolute authority, but in modern usage, it often refers affectionately to a grandfather who is the emotional anchor of a family.

The story behind the word. Patriarch comes from the Greek 'patriarkhes', which combines 'patria' (family or clan) with 'arkhein' (to rule). Historically, it was used to describe the great biblical fathers of Israel, like Abraham, before expanding to describe any male family leader.
