desacralize
dee-SAK-ruh-lyze
/diːˈsækrəlaɪz/
To divest of sacred or religious significance, status, or authority.
Describes a process of stripping away holy status, whether literally (a church converted to apartments) or culturally (disenchanting political power).
The story behind the word. Formed by combining the Latin prefix de- ('reversal or removal') with sacralize (from Latin sacer, 'sacred'). The term gained popularity among 20th-century sociologists of religion, notably Max Weber and Mircea Eliade, to analyze modern disenchantment.
