heresy

HER-uh-see /ˈhɛrəsi/
nounC1GRESAT
formalhistoricalfigurative

Belief or opinion contrary to orthodox religious (or accepted secular) doctrine.

Implies a radical, unacceptable departure from established group dogma; carries strong historical connotations of severe trial and punishment.

The story behind the word. Originally in ancient Greek, 'hairesis' was a neutral word meaning simply 'choice' or 'a chosen school of philosophy'. However, as early Christian leaders sought to unify church teachings, making a personal 'choice' outside official orthodoxy came to be viewed as dangerous rebellion. Thus, the concept of simply 'choosing your own belief' became 'heresy'.
