oversight
OH-ver-syte
/ˈoʊvərsaɪt/
Regulatory supervision or management of a project; alternatively, an accidental failure to notice something.
In construction management, oversight almost always refers to intentional, watchful monitoring to ensure safety and structural integrity.
The story behind the word. Formed in Middle English from combining 'over' and 'sight'. Originally meaning the act of looking over or watching over something, the word fascinatingly evolved two opposite senses: looking over something to protect it (supervision) and looking right over something without seeing it (omission).
