A long, flat horizontal board mounted vertically on the exposed outer edges of roof rafters, onto which gutters are fastened.
Fascia caps the rafter ends to protect them from weather while providing an aesthetic trim line and a strong mounting band for rain gutters.
The story behind the word. In ancient Rome, 'fascia' referred to a long cloth band wrapped around the body. Roman architects adapted the word to describe flat horizontal bands framing classical pediments, which evolved into modern wooden fascia boards.
