A conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an object, substance, or region, especially during welding or electrolysis.
In arc welding, the electrode creates the electric arc with the workpiece and often supplies filler metal simultaneously (consumable electrode).
The story behind the word. Coined in 1834 by polymath William Whewell at the request of Michael Faraday, electrode combines Greek 'elektron' (amber, source of static charge) with 'hodos' (a path or way), literally meaning 'the path for electricity.'

- TIG welding uses tungsten electrodes because tungsten has the highest melting point of all pure metals (3,422°C), allowing it to conduct electricity without melting.
