bibliography
bib-lee-OG-ruh-fee
/ˌbɪbliˈɒɡrəfi/
A list of the books referred to in a scholarly work, typically printed as an appendix.
A comprehensive list of all sources consulted, not just those directly cited, often formatted according to a specific style guide.
The story behind the word. The word 'bibliography' comes from the Greek 'bibliographia', a combination of 'biblion' meaning 'book' (from 'byblos', papyrus) and 'graphein' meaning 'to write'. Originally, it referred to the 'writing of books' or the 'copying of books'. By the 17th century, its meaning shifted to the 'writing about books', specifically the systematic description and listing of books, which is closer to its modern academic use.
