An additional performance or repeat of a performance demanded by an audience.

The story behind the word. In French, 'encore' simply means 'again' or 'still'. Ironically, French audiences do not shout 'encore!' to demand a repeat performance; they shout 'bis!' (twice). It was English audiences who adopted the French word 'encore' for this specific theatrical custom.
