encore

AHN-kor /ˈɒŋkɔːr/
nouninterjectionverbB2
neutral

An additional performance or repeat of a performance demanded by an audience.

Represents the ultimate tribute from an audience, showing that they are so delighted they refuse to let the performer leave.

The story behind the word. In French, 'encore' simply means 'again' or 'still'. Ironically, French audiences do not shout 'encore!' to demand a repeat performance; they shout 'bis!' (twice). It was English audiences who adopted the French word 'encore' for this specific theatrical custom.

Word relationships

  • repeat performance: A 'repeat performance' can be scheduled, while an 'encore' is specifically prompted by immediate audience demand.
  • curtain call: A 'curtain call' is when actors return to bow, but they do not necessarily perform additional material as they do in an 'encore'.

Commonly confused with

  • reprise: A 'reprise' is a repetition of a musical theme later in the same show, while an 'encore' is an extra performance at the very end.

Word family

  • encored (verb (past)): Called back for a repeat performance.

Collocations

  • demand an encore
  • play an encore
  • shout encore

Example sentences

  • "The crowd screamed for an encore until the band returned to the stage to play their biggest hit." At the end of a rock concert.
  • "The delighted audience encored the soprano, forcing her to sing the aria once more." Using the word as a verb.

Memory hook

Think of 'one more'. An 'encore' is 'one more' song for the crowd. The crowd shouting for one more.

When not to use

Do not use for scheduled repetitions of a show (like a matinee); it must be an unplanned, demanded addition.

Fun facts

  • Some classical performers prepare specific, highly complex pieces exclusively to be played as encores, anticipating the crowd's demand.
