shitpost
SHIT-pohst
/ˈʃɪt.poʊst/
Online content that is intentionally of low quality, absurd, or nonsensical, shared to disrupt discussions or amuse an insider audience.
Unlike conventional spam, a shitpost is self-aware, ironic, and deliberate in its silliness or lack of effort.
The story behind the word. Emerging in message board culture around 2007 on Something Awful and 4chan, the term described posts that intentionally lowered thread quality with absurd, context-free nonsense. Over time, it evolved into a recognized genre of modern internet comedy rooted in surrealism.
