The degree to which a substance or device opposes the passage of an electric current, causing energy to be dissipated as heat.

In electrical terms, resistance is a constant property of DC circuits (and AC circuits with only resistive loads), unlike impedance, which changes with frequency.

The story behind the word. From Latin re- (against) and sistere (to stand or stop). Literally, it means 'to stand against.' In physics, Georg Ohm used this concept in the 1820s to describe how materials stand against the flow of electrical current.
