A first, typical, or preliminary model of something, especially a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied.

A prototype is functional and meant for testing, unlike a mock-up, which might only show visual appearance without working parts.

The story behind the word. The word traces back to the Greek 'prototypon', meaning 'primitive form.' It combines 'protos' (first) and 'typos' (an impression or mold). Historically, it referred to the original model from which plaster casts or metal prints were struck.

Word relationships

  • archetype: An archetype is an ideal or classic example of something, whereas a prototype is a physical, testable early version of a product.
  • mock-up: A mock-up is typically a non-functional visual model, whereas a prototype usually has some degree of working functionality.
  • production model: The final, mass-manufactured version of a product sold to consumers.

Commonly confused with

  • blueprint: A blueprint is a 2D technical drawing or plan, while a prototype is a physical, 3D model.
