A synthetic fiber made of polyester and nylon that is extremely fine, used to make non-abrasive, highly absorbent cloths for cleaning and detailing.

Microfiber is preferred in detailing because its split fibers create a massive surface area that traps dirt and dust rather than dragging it across the paint.

The story behind the word. Coined in the late 20th century, microfiber combines the Greek 'mikros' (small) with the Latin 'fibra'. The technology was developed in Japan in the 1970s to create lightweight swimwear, but detailers quickly realized that these ultra-fine fibers—one-sixteenth the thickness of a human hair—were perfect for picking up dust without scratching paint.
