underwriter

UHN-der-ry-ter /ˈʌndərˌraɪtər/
nounC1GREGMATCAT
financialprofessional

A financial professional who evaluates the risks of insuring a particular person, property, or vehicle, and determines the premium rates and policy terms.

Underwriters are the gatekeepers of insurance. They use statistical data and risk models to decide if an applicant is too risky to insure, or how much they must pay to offset that risk.

The story behind the word. In 17th-century London, merchants met at Lloyd's Coffee House to insure ships. A description of the vessel and its cargo was written on a sheet of paper. Wealthy individuals who agreed to share the risk would literally write their names and signatures 'under' the text, stating the percentage of risk they accepted. Hence, they were 'underwriters'.

Word relationships

  • risk assessor: Risk assessor is a general term for anyone evaluating danger, while an underwriter is a specific financial role with the authority to issue insurance policies.

Commonly confused with

  • policyholder: The underwriter represents the insurance company and assesses risk; the policyholder is the client who buys the protection.

Word family

  • underwrite (verb): To accept financial responsibility for a risk.
  • underwriting (noun/adjective): The process of assessing risk, or relating to that process.

Collocations

  • insurance underwriter

Memory hook

When not to use

Do not confuse with an insurance agent or broker. Agents sell the policies to customers, but underwriters make the actual decision to approve or deny the application behind the scenes.

Fun facts

  • Lloyd's of London, which began in a simple coffee house, is still the most famous insurance market in the world, operating on the same underwriting principles established over 300 years ago.
