A person or entity who brings a legal action or civil case against another in a court of law.
Applies strictly to civil litigation; in criminal law, the equivalent party is the prosecution or government.
The story behind the word. Derives from Anglo-French plaintif ('grieving, complaining'), ultimately rooted in Latin plangere ('to beat one's breast in grief'). Shares an ancestor with the word 'plaintive'. Originally, the plaintiff was literally the aggrieved party weeping and lamenting their loss before a magistrate.
