In legal torts, 'the prudent person standard' is the benchmark used to measure whether conduct was negligent.

The story behind the word. Contracted from Latin providens ('foreseeing or looking ahead'), present participle of providere (pro- 'forward' + videre 'to see'). A prudent individual is etymologically one who 'sees forward' and prepares accordingly.
