The story behind the word. "Vulnerable" comes from the Latin word "vulnus," meaning "a wound." The Latin verb "vulnerare" meant "to wound." So, to be vulnerable is literally to be "woundable" or capable of being wounded. It entered English in the early 17th century, initially in a physical sense, but quickly developed its figurative meaning of being susceptible to emotional or psychological harm.
