apatheia

ap-uh-THAY-uh /ˌæpəˈθeɪə/
nounC2GRE
academicphilosophical

In Stoic philosophy, freedom from irrational passions, unwholesome desires, and emotional disturbance.

Crucially distinct from modern 'apathy' (which means cold indifference); classical apatheia is freedom from harmful emotional reactivity.

The story behind the word. Constructed in Ancient Greece from 'a-' (without) and 'pathos' (suffering or violent emotion). To early Stoics, 'passions' were literally diseases of the soul—irrational movements of judgment. Apatheia was health: freedom from those mental fevers.

  • passion: In Stoic terms, passion (pathos) is an irrational emotional storm that overrules reason.
  • reactivity: Reactivity is immediate, knee-jerk emotional response.
