The emission of visible light by a hot body as a result of its high temperature.
Strictly requires extreme thermal heat, such as glowing metal, burning embers, or lamp filaments.
The story behind the word. From Latin 'incandescere', meaning 'to grow white-hot', from 'candere' (to be white). This root also gave us 'candidate', because political seekers in Rome wore glowing white robes.
