To restrict wave vibrations to a single direction or plane; or to divide a group into sharply contrasting factions.
In physics, filters unpolarized light into aligned waves; in social contexts, divides viewpoints into extreme opposing poles.
The story behind the word. Coined in 1812 by French physicist Étienne-Louis Malus from Latin 'polus' (pole). He discovered that reflected light off glass showed directional properties akin to magnetic poles.
