Strategic power or advantage used to influence people, decisions, or situations; or to use something to maximum advantage.
In politics, leverage involves using votes, economic assets, or public influence to force compromises.
The story behind the word. Derived from Old French 'levier' (a mechanical lever) and Latin 'levare' (to lift). Just as a mechanical lever allows a small force to move a heavy object, political leverage allows limited power to move major policy.
