Involving a relationship of mutual benefit or dependence between two different organisms or groups.

While originally biological, it is now used for any partnership where both sides gain something essential.

The story behind the word. Coined in the 19th century from the Greek 'sumbiōsis', meaning 'living together'. It was first used to describe lichens, which are actually a fungus and an alga living as one.

Word relationships

  • mutualistic: Mutualistic is a more specific biological term where both species benefit; symbiotic can technically include parasitic relationships, though it usually implies benefit in common usage.
  • parasitic: Parasitic implies one side benefits at the total expense of the other.

Commonly confused with

  • symbolic: Symbolic means representing something else; symbiotic means living together for mutual benefit.
