distance
DISS-tuhnss
/ˈdɪs.təns/
To make a point of not being associated with someone or something; to put physical or emotional space between oneself and another.
As a verb, it is often used reflexively ('to distance oneself') to avoid political fallout, social embarrassment, or emotional pain.
The story behind the word. From the Latin 'distare', which combines 'di-' (apart) and 'stare' (to stand). It literally means 'to stand apart'. For centuries, it was only a noun describing physical space, but by the 19th century, English speakers began using it as a verb to describe the social act of standing far away from someone else's bad reputation.
