detach
dih-TATCH
/dɪˈtætʃ/
To disengage or separate something from another thing; to distance oneself emotionally.
Can be a physical action (unclicking a latch) or a psychological defense mechanism (removing oneself from emotional involvement to stay objective).
The story behind the word. Detach is born from the Old French word 'destachier'. The 'tach' part of the word is related to our modern word 'tack' (like a thumb-tack). Therefore, to detach is literally to 'un-tack' or pull out the nail that was holding two things together.
Word relationships
- disconnect: Disconnect is purely functional, whereas detach often carries a psychological nuance of self-preservation or objectivity.
- disengage: Disengage implies releasing something from a mechanism or a tight grip, while detach is simply unfastening.
- attach: Attach means to fasten, join, or connect one thing to another.
- engage: Engage means to involve oneself deeply or to lock gears together, the opposite of detaching.
Commonly confused with
- isolate: Isolate means to place someone entirely alone, whereas detach means to unfasten or step back emotionally while still remaining in the same space.

Memory hook
Think of pulling a 'tack' out of a bulletin board. You are 'de-tacking' or detaching the paper from the wall. Detach is to pull out the tack.
When not to use
Do not use when describing a hostile, angry split; detach is cool, clinical, and unemotional.
Fun facts
- In military terminology, a 'detachment' is a group of soldiers sent away from the main body on a special, separate mission.
