A specific class of computer software that provides low-level control for a device's specific hardware. It's often stored on non-volatile memory chips.

The story behind the word. The term 'Firmware' was coined in 1967 by Ascher Opler to describe a new type of program that was 'firm' – meaning relatively permanent and fixed – unlike traditional 'software' that could be easily changed, yet it wasn't 'hardware' either. It represented a middle ground: software that was so closely tied to specific hardware that it felt almost like a permanent part of it. It's 'firm' software.
