Modem
MOH-dem
/ˈmoʊdɛm/
A device that modulates and demodulates signals, converting digital data from a computer into analog signals for transmission over telephone lines, cable, or fiber, and vice versa.
It's the bridge between your digital devices and the analog transmission lines of your internet service provider.
The story behind the word. The word 'Modem' is a clever portmanteau, a blend of two words: 'modulator' and 'demodulator.' It was coined in the 1950s to describe a device that could both 'modulate' (convert digital signals into analog for transmission) and 'demodulate' (convert analog signals back into digital for reception). It's a perfect linguistic shortcut for its dual-function role as a digital translator.
