deity
DEE-uh-tee
/ˈdeɪ.ɪ.ti/
A god or goddess; a being with divine status, qualities, or nature.
While 'god' is often used in a personal or monotheistic sense, 'deity' is a more clinical, academic term used to describe any supernatural being worshipped in a religion.
The story behind the word. The word 'deity' comes from the Latin 'deus', which shares a common ancestor with the Greek 'Zeus'. It ultimately traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to shine', suggesting that ancient peoples viewed their gods primarily as 'shining ones' or beings of light.
