The forced removal of people from their home, land, or environment.
Connotes disruption, trauma, and involuntary upheaval caused by war, government policy, or ecological shifts.
The story behind the word. Formed by combining Latin dis- ('away') with Old French placer ('to place'). Originally used in physical mechanics to describe water pushed aside by an object, it expanded in the 19th century to describe demographic uprooting.
