downtime
DOWN-tym
/ˈdaʊnˌtaɪm/
Time during which a machine, computer, or factory is out of action; (figuratively) a period of rest or relaxation for a person, free from work or demands.
Implies a necessary, scheduled period of rest to prevent burnout or system failure.
The story behind the word. Originally a 19th-century industrial term, 'downtime' referred to the periods when factory machinery was stopped for maintenance or repairs. As the corporate world became more fast-paced, the term was adopted metaphorically to describe the human need to shut down our mental engines for self-care.
