endorsement
en-DORS-munt
/ɪnˈdɔːrsmənt/
An official addition or notation on a driver's license that grants authorization to operate specific types of vehicles or transport special cargo.
Acts as an add-on permission to an existing license, requiring extra testing (e.g., motorcycle, hazardous materials, school bus).
The story behind the word. Literally meaning 'on the back', endorsement comes from the historical practice of writing legal amendments or validation signatures on the back of paper deeds, legal notes, and licenses. Over time, it came to mean any legal provision added to an official document.
