The story behind the word. Coined in 1833 by polymath William Whewell at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He attached the actor suffix '-ist' (from Greek '-istes') to the Latin root 'scientia' (knowledge) to create a title equivalent to 'artist' for those studying the physical world.
