Hydrocarbon
An organic compound consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Hydrocarbons are the simplest organic compounds and form the backbone of many more complex organic molecules. They can be saturated (single bonds) or unsaturated (double/triple bonds), and can form chains, rings, or branched structures.
Word relationships
- alkane: A specific type of saturated hydrocarbon (single bonds only).
- alkene: A specific type of unsaturated hydrocarbon (at least one double bond).
Commonly confused with
- Organic compound: All hydrocarbons are organic compounds, but not all organic compounds are hydrocarbons (e.g., ethanol is an organic compound but not a hydrocarbon because it contains oxygen).
Word family
- hydrocarbonaceous (adjective): composed of or rich in hydrocarbons
Collocations
- aromatic hydrocarbon
- aliphatic hydrocarbon
- saturated hydrocarbon
- unsaturated hydrocarbon
- hydrocarbon fuel
Example sentences
- "The refining process separates crude oil into different hydrocarbon fractions, such as gasoline and diesel." Petroleum and natural gas are primarily composed of various hydrocarbons.
- "The burning of hydrocarbon fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere." Methane, the simplest hydrocarbon, is a potent greenhouse gas.
- "Ethylene, a small hydrocarbon, is the monomer used to produce polyethylene." Many plastics are derived from hydrocarbon monomers.
Memory hook
It's literally 'HYDRO-gen' and 'CARBON' put together. If it has only those two elements, it's a hydrocarbon! Hydrogen and carbon only.
When not to use
Do not use 'hydrocarbon' for organic compounds that contain other elements like oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur (e.g., alcohol is not a hydrocarbon).
Fun facts
- Hydrocarbons are the primary components of fossil fuels, making them central to global energy production but also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.
- The diversity of hydrocarbon structures, from simple methane to complex polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, is immense.
