The right, condition, or freedom of an individual to govern their own actions and make independent work decisions.

In work contexts, autonomy means freedom over how, when, or where tasks are performed, self-governance without micromanagement.

The story behind the word. Derived from Greek 'autonomia' (independence of a city-state), from 'autos' (self) and 'nomos' (law). Applied to political self-rule in the 17th century, Kant applied it to personal ethics, and Self-Determination Theory brought it into workplace psychology.

Word relationships

  • independence: Independence means standing alone without reliance on others, while autonomy is freedom of self-governance within a system.
  • sovereignty: Sovereignty refers to political supreme power of a state, whereas autonomy describes self-agency of individuals or units.
  • micromanagement: Excessive control and detailed supervision of work by a manager.
  • subjugation: The state of being brought under complete control.
