Public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy.
Often involves speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves or pushing for systemic change.
The story behind the word. From 'ad-' (to) and 'vocare' (to call). In Roman law, an 'advocatus' was a friend called upon to stand by a person in court and give them support or advice. They weren't necessarily a lawyer, just a 'voice' by your side.
