The amalgamation or attempted blending of different religions, cultures, or schools of thought.

Describes the organic or intentional merging of distinct practices, beliefs, or cultural elements into a hybrid form.

The story behind the word. Plutarch recorded that the rival cities of Crete, usually at war, would unite whenever an outside enemy threatened them — a process called 'synkretismos'. In the Renaissance, Erasmus repurposed the term to describe reconciling opposing philosophical systems.
