Etiquette
ET-i-ket
/ˈɛtɪkɛt/
The customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.
Etiquette refers to unwritten rules of social conduct that, while not laws, are expected to be followed for smooth social interaction.
The story behind the word. The word 'etiquette' comes from the Old French 'estiquette,' meaning a 'small tag' or 'label.' In the 17th century, these 'etiquettes' were literally small cards or tickets posted at the French court of Versailles, instructing courtiers on proper behavior and where to stand. Over time, the word shifted from referring to the physical labels to the rules of conduct themselves, becoming the 'code of polite behavior' we know today.
