Biodiversity
BY-oh-dy-VER-si-tee
/ˌbaɪoʊdaɪˈvɜːrsɪti/
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Refers to the range of genetic, species, and ecosystem variation.
The story behind the word. The term 'Biodiversity' is a contraction of 'biological diversity.' It was popularized by American entomologist Edward O. Wilson in 1985, who used it as the title for a national forum and subsequent book. While 'biological diversity' had been used earlier, Wilson's work cemented 'biodiversity' as the standard, concise term to describe the vast array of life on Earth.
