nounC1GRETOEFL
FormalTechnical

The official procedure or system of rules governing affairs of state or diplomatic occasions; (computing) a set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices.

In computing, it's a precise set of rules ensuring devices can understand each other. In general use, it refers to formal etiquette or procedures.

The story behind the word. The word 'protocol' comes from the Late Latin 'protocollum', which itself came from the Greek 'protokollon'. This Greek term referred to the 'first sheet glued onto a papyrus roll', which contained an abstract of the contents. It was the 'first glue' (`proto` meaning 'first' and `kolla` meaning 'glue'). Over time, it evolved to mean the original record, then a draft of a treaty, and eventually, the formal rules governing procedures.
